Organization Profile

Healthy Communities, Inc., dba Healthy Oakland, is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization co-founded by Pastor Raymond E. Lankford, MSW and Bishop E. C. Reems-Dickerson as a result of escalating violence and health disparities in the African American communities in Oakland.  Our theme "Reclaiming, Repairing, and Restoring Our Community" was introduced to Oakland and the Bay Area on September 8, 2001 with a march and rally and culminating at Verdese R. Carter Park in East Oakland with a “Non-Violence and Health Festival” with over 5,000 participants.

Every year our mobile health van provides health screenings at parks, churches, schools, BLACK EXPO and the African American Health Summit convened by the Bay Area Black United Fund at the Marriott Oakland Convention Center, and the Summer Concert Series, sponsored by Oakland City Councilwoman Desley Brooks and D’Wayne Wiggins, at Arroyo Viejo Park.  Our medical van has provided men’s health services at San Quentin prison to over 300 male inmates, at the “State of the African American Male” Conference led by Congresswoman Barbara Lee, prostate cancer screenings at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in West Oakland, and throughout the Bay Area.

After providing health screenings on our mobile health van throughout the Bay Area for 2 ˝ years, Healthy Oakland opened a Family Resource and Save A Life Wellness Center in 2004 on San Pablo Avenue in West Oakland so that we may provide more comprehensive services and case management to at-risk individuals and families.

Healthy Communities, Inc. became the parent organization in May 2003 as Healthy Oakland expanded its outreach and services to other cities and states.  Currently Healthy Communities, Inc. is providing, through collaboration, services in Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, Vallejo, Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Stockton, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
