Bringing Communities to Life
Healthy Communities, Inc. is a faith-based, 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization co-founded in 2001 by Pastor Raymond E. Lankford, MSW, and Bishop E. C. Reems-Dickerson in an effort to address and remedy the health inequities and escalating violence that plague the communities of the East Bay.
Healthy Communities' theme “Reclaiming, Repairing, and Restoring Our Community” was introduced to Oakland and the Bay Area on September 8, 2001 with a march and rally which culminated at Verdese R. Carter Park in East Oakland with a “Non-Violence and Health Festival” that drew over 5,000 participants.
Over the course of the past ten years of service to the residents of the East Bay and beyond, Healthy Communities, Inc. has continued its commitment to expanding its services to a segment of society that is considered hard to reach— the uninsured, underinsured, indigent, those who were formerly in foster care and those who are now re-entering society after serving time in prison.
Too often in our communities, men - particularly men of color - fail to seek preventive care, waiting instead until their symptoms become serious and require emergency care. Healthy Communities aims to provide an integrated healthcare services model to reduce the use of already over-burdened emergency rooms for non-urgent medical needs.
Our vision is to be the best community-serving health and life-enhancing agency in every community we operate in—in the eyes of community members, stakeholders and staff. We expect, demand and apply the very best we have to offer by always keeping our values foremost in mind.
Our mission is to decrease violence and health inequities in people of color in every community in which we offer services. We shall accomplish this by collaborating with other community conscious organizations, churches, businesses, and individuals. We shall engage community and political leadership to foster lasting relationships and activities that build a stronger and safer community.
